- The Bollenhut: A Symbol of Tradition
The Bollenhut, literally meaning “ball hat,” has a rich history in the Black Forest region of Germany. Since around 1750, Protestant women in the villages of Gutach, Kirnbach, and Hornberg-Reichenbach have worn this distinctive headdress as part of their traditional costume (Tracht). The broad-brimmed straw hat boasts 14 prominent woolen pompoms arranged in a cross shape, with only eleven visible due to overlapping layers. Unmarried women wear red pompoms, married women wear black, and older women and widows wear a simple mob cap.
The Bollenhut’s picturesque appearance has made it a symbol of the entire Black Forest, despite its local origins. Interestingly, the red pompoms and white brim of the Bollenhut are said to have inspired the top layer of the famous Black Forest Cake.
